Prepare for over $1 Billion in Political Ad Spending
Senate Runoffs may spawn over $1 billion in advertisements
Georgia voters may see the most expensive political ad campaign for a Senate race, as Democrats and Republicans battle over a majority in the Senate. According to Open Secrets, the most expensive Senate race this year was in South Carolina with over $180 million spent. Georgia ad spending however is about to blow that number away.
Ad Age, which is an industry magazine that tracts spending, stated that political candidates and their backers have already committed over $272 million in advertising in the race. Tharon Johnson, a Democratic consultant said, “It’s highly feasible when it’s all said and done, on January 5 you could see $1 billion spent in Georgia,”.
Republicans have spent over $168.5 million and Democrats have spent over $102.5 million, meaning at the current pace of funding Georgia could very quickly amass over $1 billion by the January runoff. Republican Senators, Kelly Loeffler, and David Perdue said to supporters, “all eyes are on Georgia”. If the Democrats can win in January the Republicans would lose control over the Senate which would allow for an easier path for President-elect Joe Biden to push for legislation once in office.
The amount of money being dumped into this race is absolutely horrifying. It shows just how much influence money can have in our political atmosphere and why Progressives have fought so hard to remove money from politics. If there is one thing we all know is that money can corrupt and sway people’s opinions. Georgia’s runoff races will be a national race between Democrats and Republicans.
